A Study with Character: after his highly acclaimed exhibition at the Haus der Kunst, David Adjaye developed a multi-family house with Euroboden for a 1,223 sqm property at the English Garden. In an unusual way, his facade made of dark terrazzo captures the volume and rhythm of the surrounding solitary post-war buildings and transfers this into a new urban architecture.

The engagement with David Adjaye's unique architecture led me as the building owner's representative (individual procuration) to London in 2015 for an office visit and exhibition of his work. The international context of the project could also be seen in the planning of generous sunken courtyards along the northern and eastern facades, which help transform the basement areas into high-quality living spaces. Behind the clear grid of massive facade supports, a varied modulation of loggias, openings, and recesses emerged.

The special challenge of this project: the creation of high-quality living space using generous sunken courtyards met with concerns from the approving authorities about setting a precedent.
